It’s nighttime in downtown LA. City lights form a colorful urban backdrop. We follow our hero, a Tesla Model S, as it navigates the quiet city. As the car drives, we notice images of nature taking form— subtly at first, and then more distinct. Before long, a beautiful transformation has taken place as buildings form trees and city lights become stars. As this ride comes to an end, we realize that a ride is all it’s ever been: a car, driving through the city, naturally.
“Night Projections” is a spec piece sprung from the mind of director Adriano Falconi (known for his work with agencies and brands like Publicis, McCann, Fiat Group and MasterCard.) The vfx team at SUSPECT began with a concept of a projection effect starting simply enough, but soon began to behave in unexpected ways. Integrating the CG animals and forestry into the live action was only the first step. Before long the collaboration between SUSPECT ECD Tim Crean and Falconi began to push the envelope and blur the line between reality and dream. “Adriano really wanted it to come alive,” enthused Crean, “for the viewer to gradually lose touch with reality. It was a blast.”
